Materials _____________________________________
Early elementary students will be using the Alfred Prep or Alfred Premier Series Lesson Books. Early Elementary students will also use the Technic Lesson Book. Later elementary students may begin in the Piano Adventures series by Faber. Intermediate students will begin technique exercises in Junior Hanon or Schaum Finger Power books. Very young children may begin lessons in the Piano for the Young Beginner Books A & B by Bastien.
I will have books available for purchase here at my studio. Please be sure to include the payment amount for the new lesson book with the next lesson payment.
It is important for the student to bring all of his/her instructional materials to each and every lesson. Successful learning can only take place when students come prepared with all materials. If you have lost or misplaced a lesson book, please notify me by phone or e-mail in advance of the lesson day so that I can prepare substitute lesson materials for your child.
I will provide additional instructional materials to the students, including flash cards, practice logs, scale sheets, sticker reward sheets for each lesson book, sight reading exercises, and supplemental finger exercises. Since we are now able to download music from the Internet, I will also be providing some supplemental music. I would like students to keep these materials in a ring binder or similar type notebook so that they do not get lost or damaged. I have some of these notebooks available for students to utilize or they can provide a notebook of their own choice. I would encourage each student to use a book bag to bring their lesson materials to each lesson. It is a good way to keep materials organized and prevents excessive damage to the books.
In addition to their lesson books, I will also encourage each student to select some pieces that they enjoy listening to, whether it is classical, jazz, country, rock or pop music. Encouraging a student to learn music they love, rather than only teaching them unfamiliar pieces in a lesson book, can be inspiring and motivating. It may even change their course on the path towards becoming an accomplished musician.
